The Louvre Pyramid entrance structure was designed by the Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei. When Pei designed the glass and steel pyramid it was, at the time, a very controversial architectural design choice. However, the design was approved and the Louvre Pyramid entrance to the Musée du Louvre was opened to the public in March 1989.
Despite the controversy of the design it is now considered Pei’s most famous structure. For me I think the concept works really well, it provides a very modern feel to the Louvre that contrasts very nicely with the more traditional main structure.
During mid December we made our latest visit to Paris and had opportunity to photograph the Louvre Pyramid in late afternoon as the light faded. Here are a selection of those images, some internal, a few using the water features as foreground and a couple with a ‘creative’ twist.
